Lessons for the Church from Supporting Elite Athletes. Christians In Sport’s Dr Graham Daniels on the Future Church Podcast

I first met Dr Graham Daniels when as a new Christian and still in the police force and he was a professional footballer who helped lead The Walk Of 1000 Men across the Pennines on a three week mission in 1991 (I took part in the first week and helped organise the third and final week.).

That time together was a real eye opener and faith stretcher for me and hundreds of others as we relied on God to open doors, provide places to eat and sleep, and I had many opportunities to share new faith as we discuss some great memories and lessons learned near the end of our fantastic time together here.

Graham was the first vegetarian I ever met, before it was trendy.

He grew up in South Wales and was signed by Cardiff City when playing for Wales Schools under 18s. After uni he signed for Cambridge United alongside team-mates such as David Moyes and Alan Comfort (this is when he became a Christian) before switching to Cambridge City. After that he became a football manager and Director. He’s an author and great speaker with opportunities to speak across the media spectrum and with a PhD for his thesis ‘Identity Formation in Christian Professional Footballers’.

As usual on the show we range far and wide looking at issues such a what God thinks of sport, how the church can connect with people well through it, how vital the church is for elite professionals, the highs and lows of triumph and defeat and how to manage both, the recent Olympics where so many athletes went very public with their faith. This is an incredibly encouraging and insightful interview and you don’t need to be a sports pro or armchair pundit to get a lot from listening!
