How To Raise Up The Next Generation of Leaders – Ness Wilson

My notes from a wonderful session at today’s LAUNCH. The Lord did so many amazing things among us I’m so looking forward to tomorrow – but here’s my notes on the seminar I sat in when Ness shared.

Raising up other leaders starts in the heart.

Many leaders don’t do it – because they don’t want to.

They are more interested in the seating capacity than the sending capacity.

Hero makers want to empower, create space, give away even some of the aspects of leadership that you like – that’s a sacrifice.

No success without successors!

HOW?

  1. Create a culture that attracts leaders. YOU get to set the culture. Make room around the table, train up, raise up and other leaders will come into that. State it ‘this is a church that raises up leaders..’ This is not a church to be in if you want to stay the same.
  2. Green light culture: permission to have a go, have 6 week experiments and see what happens. So there’s no failure. Appoint a captain and a crew. You don’t need them to be the elder/leader…
  3. Culture of creating disciples. How good are we at actually doing this? We have to do a 180 degree call to the primary task of disciple making, so review what you are doing, Grow Groups. Bands of 3 or 4 – especially maybe for middle aged men who have learned to present well but on the inside be drying up.
  4. Low bar and High Bar. You don’t have to be perfect, but you are also to be above reproach for leaders, 1 Tim 3, drill down – what does it mean? How do we stop so many falling and failing? Gifting opens doors but character keeps you in the room. Evidence of truth telling, integrity, servanthood.
  5. Recognise embryonic potential. Watch what happens to those around them when they pray/ lead. Recognise that leadership potential can be different in a young woman than man. Look for those willing to pay the price.
  6. Recognise there’s a timing to calling someone up. Sometimes you will see it before them, ‘I want you to trust me and what I can see even if you can’t yet.’
  7. Intentional Discipleship Pathways, development and Training. For head (knowledge and obedient), heart (identity and security as the ever-beloved) and hands (skills – including the ability to teach sound doctrine and reach others).
  8. Help them learn to lead – Romans 12:8. How to lead team. Team is God’s idea! There’s such wisdom needed here. Discernment. Who is Hungry, Humble and (People) Smart? (Lencioni) How to grow others and help avoid division. Having open, honest, conversations. Have good external oversight.
  9. The Fivefold: There are mature and immature versions of the APEST gifts. How do we mitigate the risks of the immaturity without quenching prophecy for example.
  10. Culture of Feedback. Have feedback forms as part of normal culture. Put it in as part of the ask to do it. Ask for it yourself. If not maybe they have a go and to be honest it’s not great so they just don’t get asked again. That’s pretty awful. The quality of the feedback you get is more dependent on the receiver than the giver. How open are you to hear it? If you posture yourself that this will help you get better, you are modelling something great – it’s a gift. You can learn to discern whether their heart is critical or constructive!
  11. Commission and Permission. For wherever they are going and doing next in the Kingdom not just ministry.
  12. Ongoing Support to those we have sent. Zoom calls, visits. We have to be consistent in this. If we are sending them we need to be committed to ongoing support of them too.
  13. Get a list of who you are raising up. Pray for them, invest time hanging out, take them with you. Trust the Holy Spirit in this next wave of what he is doing, we need to get more people ready than ever!
