We just started a new series at Ivy in the Book of Nehemiah, beginning with a defining moment that will take a man from leading as a civil servant in the royal court to rescue worker and rebuilder, restorer of broken walls in a war zone far away.

Nehemiah’s story of how he left a legacy starts when he is living in Persia – successful, secure, influential. A Jewish exile, yes, but the boy done good! He’s in the palace. Trusted. Comfortable.
And that’s the real danger. Because comfort kills calling.
Comfort Kills Callings
He hears the report: Jerusalem’s walls are broken. The gates burned. The people exposed. 3 word headline? Remnant. Rubble. Reproach. The city that should display God’s glory is instead marked by shame. Nobody is safe, there.
And everything could have stayed the same, except Nehemiah didn’t just hear it.
He saw it.
Not on a screen he could scroll by on or switch off – he saw the need, in his imagination. He allowed God to interrupt him. To disturb him. To show him what it must feel like – for them – to live in that reality.
And that’s exactly where breakthrough always begins.
Nehemiah 1:4 – “When I heard these things, I sat down and wept…”
He mourns.
He fasts.
He prays.
No strategy yet. No plan. Just a burden. That’s what the old timers call it.
The Kind of Leaders God Uses
Scripture tells us that God is actively looking for people whose hearts are fully His. Not casually interested – deeply burdened. That’s who he gives his biggest jobs to.
People who won’t stay comfortable when something is broken.
If you live at the level of interest, you’ll never step into impact, because you won’t be willing to make an investment.
But when God places something on your heart he wants to change, it changes you. You carry it. You talk about it. You pray about it – constantly. You’re not just interested – others will think you’re intense.
That’s usually a sign – you’re getting close to your purpose – because somewhere there’s darkness where light needs to shine and God is pulling you toward it.
And Breakthrough prayer is what brings it.
How to Pray for B.R.E.A.K.through
Nehemiah shows leaders how to move from burden… to breakthrough – so let’s BREAK it down.
B – Burden
This is where it starts.
Not surface-level prayer. Not routine language.
A God-given burden. Not interested – intense!
Nehemiah didn’t just analyse the problem – he felt it.
The world trains us to avoid discomfort. To walk past need. To stay detached and distracted.
But often the problem we want to escape… is the place God wants to use us.
A burden forms when you stop complaining, “What’s wrong out there?” or even praying, “God what are YOU going to do?” and start asking instead:
“Lord, what do You want ME to do?”
R – Revelation
Nehemiah lifts his eyes to God before he lifts his request and rightsizes what’s going on. Who is he praying to?
Nehemiah 1:5 – “Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God…”
The size of your prayer is shaped by the size of your God. When your view of God is small, your prayers will be too, but when you see Him rightly – everything shifts in proportion.
Breakthrough prayer requires revelation.
Not of the problem.
But of the God who is with you, beside you, for you – and now in the new covenant – IN you!
E – Examination
Before Nehemiah asks God to act, he asks God to search him – to see if he’s part of the problem!
Nehemiah 1:6-7 he concludes, yes – “I confess… including myself…” I’m not perfect, I’m not all that, I’m very ordinary and fallible and I and my people have let you down so many times Lord… No blame-shifting. No pointing outward. Just honesty.
Because Scripture says in Psalm 66:18 – “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” You’ll never get breakthrough that way. In fact however much we care about or feel the need, Breakthrough is often blocked not by lack of passion…but by lack of repentance.
Nothing clears the way for God to move, like humility.
A – Agreement
Now this is the fuse in the dynamite! This is where prayer becomes powerful. It’s our secret not so secret weapon…
Nehemiah, like so many other prayer warrors, pray God’s Word back to Him.
Nehemiah 1:8-9 “Remember – what You said…”
He’s not informing God. He’s aligning with Him and the truth of his promises.
So often we pray:
- what we feel
- what we fear
- what we want
- what we think would be best
But breakthrough comes when we pray what God has already spoken.
Because His living Word in your heart and mouth builds faith, brings power, and breaks through!
Creation itself began with God’s Word so if you want to see breakthrough – pray it.
K – Knock
He’s prayed, he’s wept. He gets up and wipes his face.
“Give your servant success today… grant him favour…” Nehemiah 1;11
This is specific. You will know by the end of the day whether or not it’s successful.
Time. Place. Person who can help make the miracle happen.
Because there comes a moment when prayer turns into a plan and into movement with purpose.
So Nehemiah steps forward toward the palace doors, he will stand before a king.
But first, he has knelt before the King of Kings.
From Nehemiah to Jesus
Here’s the Old Testament / New Testament difference we must never forget.
Nehemiah is knocking on a door he hopes will open.
But because it was Jesus Christ who said:
Matthew 7:7 – “Ask… seek… knock…”
We don’t have to wonder and worry whether we’ll get what we need – we have guaranteed access, as ambassadors for Christ, when we ask in His name!
Hebrews 4:16 is a key that says, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence…”
You’re not trying to get God’s attention. You already have it. And if you have spent time with HIM, you’ll be a lot less impressed or intimidated by any human leader.
Remember this posture – you’re not praying for victory. You’re praying from it now – because the same power that raised Christ from the dead is now at work in you and when you need a Breakthrough, that changes everything.
What’s Your Burden?
Your family?
Your church?
Your city?
Your nation?
Something in your own life that won’t shift?
It’s not just a problem. It’s an invitation. To pray… and the old timers again said to ‘pray through…’ until the breakthrough.
So…
This week – what if we make a commitment now, before we act too quickly –
Pray BREAK – until the breakthrough.
- Feel the Burden
- Get Revelation – Lift your view of God
- Examine your heart – Am I part of the problem?
- Agree with His Word as you
- Knock and knock and knock again with bold, specific faith until you have prayed through to the breakthrough.
When leaders pray like this, everything changes.
