Alan Taylor @alantaylor82 Matt 7 ‘A House Built On’

Jesus says if you want to get what I have for you, this is the most important thing now, so lean in.
And the disciples want to learn -so they want to be more like him….

24-25 “These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.

26-27 “But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards.”

28-29 When Jesus concluded his address, the crowd burst into applause. They had never heard teaching like this. It was apparent that he was living everything he was saying—quite a contrast to their religion teachers! This was the best teaching they had ever heard.

Two foundations – rock and sand

Jesus knew there were people who would be listening to his word but not not doing anything about it.

There are 3 key elements here;

The foundation

The house

The storm

1) what’s your rock? What or who do you lean on.

People say ‘He’s a rock in midfield.’ None of us are really rocks

We are broken, cracked.

Luke 5:31 says we are sick & need a Dr.

You do not BUILD the foundation in your life, you CHOOSE it.

So – do you even know the words of Christ? Do you know the teaching of Jesus? What does he say about power / sex / stress / work?

Then…

What are you DOING about it?

Because faith without works is dead.

Jesus’ first hearers would probably think about house = temple

But Peter said ‘we are LIVING stones.’ I Peter 2

Go and see a cathedral – it will blow you away and make you go wow!

Don’t you want to be part of a community that wows people with it love?

So – what do I need to STOP to be more committed to sharing my life with the church?

What do I need to START to be better committed to sharing my life with the church?

If you aren’t going to do it – you are wasting time. This isn’t just an individual life!

The rain and the storms hit BOTH houses.

But the house on the rock STANDS.

In a storm, ask ‘What is this storm doing in me?’

‘How do I cooperate with God through this?’

If you get certain creams – it says ‘apply it liberally’

Do that with the word of Christ, and healing comes!
